TYRA MAIL!!!!
I’m so excited that it is election day and that I was in and out of my polling center in 15 minutes, perhaps less. I can’t profess to know all the ins and outs about politics but I do know that my ancesters fought their arses off to ensure black folks had the right to vote! Of course my parents schooled me about this, but it was my civil rights classes at Sarah Lawrence that sealed the deal. For the first time in my life, in a formal educational institution, I was immersed in a world that dealt exclusively with my history. It blew my mind to find that the Voting Rights Act, calling for no discrimination based off race or color, was just enacted in 1965. So this is for my peeps-specifically those who probably aren’t reading this-it is of the utmost importance that you vote and your voice is heard…even if that voice is for Romney!!!
It really took all my strength to say that last line BUT our right to express our opinions is one I don’t want to give up. I also don’t find it acceptable to squander a right that caused some to lose their lives.
I feel so accomplished, even after at least 20 years of voting, the thrill never dims.
Oh yeah…and I ain’t stayin up until the crack of dawn with bubble guts waiting to see who gets voted in! I will be in bed at my normal 10:30/11 timeframe. I have several hours before bed so I’ll be getting into homework for ‘Memoir’ class, we’re reading Gail Caldwell’s Let’s Take the Long Way Home and then I’ll be watching the always nerve-wracking Homeland.
Have a fabulous stress free night!
