Rye Rye: Baltimore’s Own Doing Her Thing

In the past few weeks there’s one name that keeps coming up whether it be in conversation, a local magazine or a movie; that name is Rye Rye. Admittedly I’ve been living in Baltimore for about 7 or 8 years (I’ve lost count) and vaguely knew her name until suprise surpise my music aficionado homegirl from LA put me D about Rye Rye. Years ago she was aware of her music and asking me about her, shamefully I knew of her but wasn’t familiar with her music since I don’t tend to listen to dance or club music too often. Then I hear she hooks up with the always spectacular M.I.A. (who is either loved or totally misunderstood) and in eachother they find kindred spirits. Thanks to the premiere Hip Hop issue of Urbanite published in July, I had the opportunity to check out Rye Rye’s story as told by her to author Al Shipley in the article “Represent the World Town” a play on the Baltimore club track “Hands Up Thumbs Down”. I’m so happy I read this article because I ran across one piece of vital information, Rye Rye also got a spot in the recently released to DVD movie,21 Jumpstreet, turns out she not only acted in this movie, a song of hers was featured as well. All I can say is big-ups to Miss Rye Rye, she is a young woman doing her thing and it’s refreshing to see someone be from Baltimore but also be willing to stretch their wings and see what else is out there. Please oh please do yourself a favor and check out that movie, her lines are hysterical, one in particular that I won’t ruin by repeating here. So I wanna shout-out Rye Rye, congratulations on doing your thing and I wish you many more successes and that “Women Who Rock” cover onRolling Stone.
