Behind a Window: Summers at Mom-Mom’s

nowme takes the pics & i write the words* Ellie looked up from her phone when Mom exited the George Washington Bridge. Maryland and fifth grade a distant memory. Mom-Mom’s apartment was in the Bronx. She liked this part: ridin’ in the heart of the city, music blaring from bodegas, people covering the block. Mom-Mom’s building …

Behind a Window: Stairway to Heaven

nowme takes the pics; i write the stories* Sunday drives are tradition in the Hernandez household. “Audrey, Eddie, Luis! Vamos!” I grab my favorite book, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and dart out the door. Mom tugs a pigtail and giggles as I run past. When we pull off, I look up at our …

Behind a Window: Freedom Soon Come

nowme takes the pics & i write the stories Tonight would be the harvest moon, freedom soon come. Simone would climb the narrow flight of stairs to her roof for access to a wide swath of uninterrupted Brooklyn sky. That was the only way to be sure it was time. A week ago, on an abandoned …

Behind a Window: It’s Just a Game

Photo by nowme. She posts the pics (NYC windows) and I write the stories (female lead, 100 words or less). Tonya didn’t have a choice the first time Royce kissed her. She was sitting by his girlfriend Monique—everyone called her Nique—in the midst of a game of Spin the Bottle. The empty bottle pointed to her. …

Behind a Window: The Golden Light

My homegirl nowme has been working on a 365 day photo challenge. Her muse has been NYC windows. She suggested we collaborate: she posts the pics and I write the stories. My rules for the micro stories: female lead, 100 words or less She flung open the black iron shutters. “It’s real,” she said, kneeling on the windowsill. …

Behind a Window: NYC Windows & Micro Stories

My homegirl Naomi aka nowme has been working on a 365 day photo challenge. Her muse has been NYC windows. Every day she posts a new image of a window on Instagram. Two weeks ago she posted this picture of a baroque-looking building with a window that seemed to capture the sky. It was stunning and I told …

Me & my Auntie/Twin hangin @lafoodmarketa after a couple of shots & margaritas. My sis @aqua2529 stopped by to check in on us. Happy Friday y’all ✌🏾 & 💜
Happy B’earth Day to my Pops, Arnaz Harlee Jefferson. He left this earthly plane back in August 2008. This first pic is the two of us; I gotta story to tell about the rest…
Y’all it’s been a week since I returned from @baldwinforthearts & I’m still floating. I’m now a Baldwin Fellow & I’m n such good company.
Y’all! The pool opens tomorrow & I can’t wait. Now please let this weather cooperate, todays perfect for a layout☀️
Y’all! I’m excited to start my residency at @baldwinforthearts today. I don’t know what this week will bring, but I’ve set the intention to be present in the space writing/creating. Beginning tomorrow I’ll be offa here for the week/end. For any deadline driven inquiries shoot me an email ✌🏾& 💜
The fresh scent of rain & the patter of raindrops on leaves, layered w/ birdsong is everything. Sir Oliver agrees.
This that Black Girl Magic folks be talkin about. Recognize the crazy talent up on this porch! I’m so grateful for the beautiful space (givin Hamptons vibes in Baltimore) & for the camaraderie & conversations.
After work I took myself to @localcolorflowers for their Wednesday Flower Happy Hour. This was my first time. They source their flowers from local growers & you’re getting what’s in season. I wasn’t prepared, you can BYOB & snax. Best believe I’ll tuck a bottle of Prosecco under my arm next time😏 But seriously flowers bring me so much joy & my faves were on display today: peonies & tulips. You get to make your own bouquet & can even buy a vase if you want…I bet you can bring your own too. What you see is the little bouquet I made & brought home. This is a small thing that means a lot to me & brings me joy. Big thanks to @gcastle90 for the recommendation💜 #bitsofjoy
