It’s the Little Things…

Don’t you love when things work out perfectly for you? It’s always fantastic if something really major works out like owing money to your college and still being allowed to walk in the commencement ceremony (my school was gangster about that, but I made a compelling argument and strutted my stuff on graduation day); but …

My day in reverse. I took a week after Thanksgiving & am now ready to embrace the Christmas season.
The year was 2000, I was still living in LA, giving my best Total look for a night out likely to hear some live music, which I used to do all the time. I’m getting that back in 2020 & beyond. My boombox w/ tape deck & CD player stayed by my bed & I didn’t have a cell phone. Seems like many moons ago. #tbt
Yesterday I went home aka my growing up place(s) for feast & fellowship. I was on my way to Havre de Grace to visit my cousin when I felt a strong urge pulling me to Old Stepney Rd. Most of my childhood happened here & on Wilshire Dr at Mom-Mom & Pop-Pop’s. I’m sad to see that the cornfield at the end of the street looks like it has been razed, but perhaps I should be glad it lasted this long. As I made my way down the street I noticed the Jesus Saves church is still the same. My sister & I used to roller skate in that parking lot. It was also the turnaround spot for when we rode our bikes. I didn’t share a picture of our old property because the house we grew up in burned down around 2010. During childhood this street was full of retired military families, but I wonder if any of the families I knew are still there. But that’s life, a constantly changing thing. The last two pictures are in Havre de Grace, the final one a distant view of the Susquehanna River. What I love most about these pictures is the enormity of the sky. Yesterday the sky showed off & so did my sister in the kitchen. One love.
Grateful to be gifted a short work day. Out at 1pm. My spirit said, check & see if The Charles (5 min. drive from the j-o-b) is screening #queenandslim this afternoon. There was a 1:15 show. I asked @carissahollymattern to join me, she said yes & so our adventure began! I love so many things about this movie: the color palette, the dialogue, the music, the urgency & immediacy of the film, how au courant it feels. I could say more but all that’s left is just the beauty. Thank you to Melina Matsoukas for her eye & Lena Waithe for her words. My heart is full. Go see this weekend. Good Morning 🍁
When your work life has been so busy you finally snap (chat)...I know corny😆 Me & @carissahollymattern playing w/ her phone. Me thinks it’s time to exit stage left.
I’m sad I can’t see this fab group of women read their beautiful words for In Our Own Words tonight @eubieblakecenter but if you can come through I promise you’ll leave inspired. #zorasden #blackwomenwriters #baltimore #readingseries
To live in NY when this album was out was a beautiful thing. My Downfall ties w/ Story to Tell as my fave records on this joint. @deakiedeak @cateyes283 @rachcynthiasmith Do y’all remember our half court basketball 🏀 days in Bronxville when we blasted this album & harmonized to Playa Haters?
